Ketchikan Fishing Minutes - August 2, 2021

Catch up on all that's happening at Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions in Ketchikan, Alaska.  For the week of August 2, 2021.

Welcome back to another edition of the Ketchikan fishing minute for the week of August 1st, 2021.

We're happy to report that Ketchikan is beginning to look a lot like it sold itself with cruise ships in port almost every day this past week, tons of activity in the air and out on the water, and of course a lot of rain.

As we've stated in previous editions of the fishing minute, low water levels in rivers and streams can make it difficult for salmon to find their way back to the spawning grounds.

The rain this last week was a small breath of fresh air.

Rivers were raging which should help these fish easily hone in on home but guests this week didn't let a little weather keep them inside.

They hit the water and were rewarded handsomely for their effort.

We have continued to see strong catches of pinks throughout this last week.

Surprisingly, we have also continued to see a large number of coho being caught.

Anecdotally, the summer coho run we've had this season has been one of the best we've seen in years and guests are taking full advantage of it.

Guests continued to consistently find fish at Survey point, Balner, Pup island, Betin island, Kameno, Tattoos rocks, and Grant island.

With salmon fishing hot and a few fish on ice back at the resort some guests took the opportunity to seek out some bottom fish as well.

Over the last couple of seasons, we have seen a lot of halibut moving through the area and guests have enjoyed the opportunity to fish for them.

Wally and Ashland Nelson along with Lucy Kennedy and Riker not only managed to find a few halibut but also caught a few rays of sunshine during what was an otherwise overcast and wet week.

Silver king lodge guest Liza also found a few halibut and a beautiful lingcod from her skiff.

If fish and sunshine weren't enough, a few people even managed to catch a kiss or two.

Thanks to the moon family for sharing all these great pictures of your outing.

Guided fishermen continued to catch a number of cohos, pinks were plentiful too which provided a lot of catching opportunity while out on the water, even if the fish were released.

Speaking of releasing fish, On august 1 the department of fish and game closed southeast waters to the retention of king salmon for non-resident fishermen.

Any kings caught for the rest of the seasons are required to be released.

The weather did hamper the halibut and bottom fishing for guided boats a couple of days this last week so guides spent most of those days targeting salmon.

As soon as the weather cooperated again, they were back out chasing halibut and other bottom fish and were quite successful at finding what they were looking for including John and Jessica Duke and their kids.

John's parents Jim and Kathy were some of the first guests we hosted at the Cedars lodge.

Coming each year with a much younger John to fish with captain Sunny Campbell.

When Sunny retired, the dukes moved to Sean Mitchell's boat the wait and see and have fished with him annually since then.

It's obvious that Jim and Kathy's love of fishing, which was passed to John is now being passed on to John's kids too.

Ketchikan has so much to offer not only the newest and most inexperienced fishermen but also those who have been coming back year after year to enjoy the great outdoors and make memories with family and friends.

Whether you're a first-generation fisherman or a third-generation fisherman like the dukes, We can't wait to capture your experience and to share it on the next Ketchikan fishing minute.
