Ketchikan Fishing Minute July 9, 2015

A quick look back at the first week of July in Ketchikan, Alaska. Surprisingly, temperatures in Ketchikan reached nearly ninety degrees! Higher air temperatures raise the surface temperature of the water and drive the salmon into deeper waters. We fished from the 14′ Livingston skiffs that are offered by both Clover Pass Resort and Silverking Lodge this week. Because there are no downriggers on the skiffs, we used diving weights to get down to the fish. The weight will dive to a depth determined by trolling speed and the size of the weight.

My boat landed two small coho on Sunday, but on Tuesday, we had two silvers and two pinks on board before 9:00 AM.

Rain is in the forecast for all of next week. Hopefully the precipitation will get the fish moving a bit, and we’ll see a lot more action. Be sure to check back next Thursday for a new Ketchikan Fishing Minute!
