Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions was proud to host the World Fishing Network for ten days this summer as they produced three episodes of “Hookin’ Up with Mariko Izumi”, which airs each Monday on the network. Now in its fourth season, the show follows Mariko around the globe to the best fishing spots on the planet. It was only a matter of time before she ended up in Ketchikan, the Salmon Capital of the World.
The show will put the spotlight on ASE Resorts, with a full episode being devoted to each property: The Cedars Lodge, Clover Pass Resort, and Silverking Lodge. The episodes also highlight the community of Ketchikan, as local artist Ray Troll, local author LaDonna Gundersen, and others join Mariko for a day of fishing and other activities.
The network was so happy with the results of their shows in Ketchikan that season four kicks off with Mariko’s Alaskan adventures. The season premiere takes place at 7:30 pm EST on November 7, 2011 when Mariko visits Silverking Lodge. The Cedars Lodge episode will follow on November 14, with Clover Pass Resort being featured on November 21. Check local listings for the time in your area.
Be sure to tune in this fall for the fourth season of “Hookin’ Up with Mariko Izumi” and get a peek at your favorite Alaskan fishing lodges. If your cable company doesn’t carry WFN, click the link below.
The annual Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions crew derby was held on the 28th of September, the day after the last guests departed from Clover Pass Resort. The derby is open to the crew at each ASE Resort (The Cedars Lodge, Clover Pass Resort, and Silverking Lodge, in addition to ASE vendors and invited guests. This year, over 100 fish were brought in by the 30+ participants in the derby, which requires all anglers to fish from open skiffs without the aid of downriggers or depth finders. The derby pot is split 50/50 between the boat that catches the most fish and the angler landing the biggest fish.
John Swan, who won the cumulative weight prize last year with teammate Joe Griffin, took home the prize for biggest fish with an 11 pound coho! Clover Pass Resort crew member, Marie Crane, finished in second place with a 10.5 pound silver.
The cumulative weight prize went to Ryan and Anna Sinkey, our friends from Experience Alaska Tours. Between the two of them, they caught nearly 100 lbs of salmon from the waters in front of Clover Pass Resort, which I am sure they will enjoy as an alternative to all the dungeness crab they get to eat!
Congratulations to everyone who participated. Thanks to the efforts of our crew, we can close the door on another successful season at Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions!

In 1776, the founding fathers created their vision of a free nation and instituted it by signing the Declaration of Independence. Today, we celebrate the unalienable rights given to us as Americans: the right to life, to liberty, and to the pursuit of happiness. Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions salutes our flag, our soldiers, and the United States of America, and we wish you all a very happy, and safe, Independence Day.
The season got started at The Cedars Lodge on a beautiful day this morning in southern southeast Alaska. Clear skies and warm temperatures are always a welcome sight in Ketchikan, and our friends enjoyed this weather with Skipper Sean Mitchel for a day on the water in the Weight ‘n Sea. Each man caught a king salmon and a halibut before heading back to the lodge.
Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions and Clover Pass Resort want to say thank you to those that have sacrificed in our behalf! We are proud to fly the American flag in honor of our Veterans, active-duty military, and reserves. God bless each of you this Memorial Day weekend!
Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions is on the road again, and Southern California is our next stop. Be sure to drop by the ASE booth for your chance to win a four-day / four-night self-guided fishing package to Clover Pass Resort in beautiful Ketchikan, AK.
The Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions team is in Phoenix this weekend at the Maricopa County Home & Garden Show. Michael Briggs will be sharing the Five Reasons Most People Take The Wrong Vacations, an independently-researched report generated for ASE Resorts by Empire Research Group. The report details the common mistakes people make when planning vacations, including not taking a vacation at all and failing to weigh the cost of a vacation against the actual value you get out of taking the right vacation. The report is available at no cost by emailing Michael Briggs at michael@aseresorts.com.
The Home & Garden show is being held at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, January 14-16. Hours of the show are:
Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
It is hard to believe that another year has passed us by and that 2011 is here. We enjoyed the fantastic fishing in 2010 but enjoyed the time we got to spend with each of you even more!
I hope everyone’s holiday was spent with family and friends, gathered around the table, swapping tall tales and fish stories. We look forward to adding to those tales when we see you again next summer.
Happy New Year from your friends at Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions!!
