Ketchikan Alaska Fishing

Thayne Robinson, of Rexburg, Idaho had a great afternoon during his trip to Silverking Lodge.  The weather was good and Thayne and his fishing partner headed north of the lodge in search of some halibut from their self-guided boat.  Thayne hooked into this nice 78-pounder and added a few pieces of halibut to his fish box!

Self-guided guests at both Clover Pass Resort and Silverking Lodge might have been lamenting the bad weather we had this week, but not for long.  After a very dry summer, rain and wind on Monday afternoon got the coho run moving.  The few days following the storm not only saw nicer weather but more fish showing up as well.

Silverking Lodge dock worker Jed Fackrell took to heart the adage, “All work and no play makes Jed a dull boy.” Not wanting to waste a perfectly good fishing opportunity (even during work!), Jed hung a hook off the Silverking dock, occasionally checking it from time to time. He managed to hook and play this 40+ pounder – surely while on his break! Halibut often migrate into shallower waters around public docks to feed on fish carcasses and scraps thrown over during fish processing.

Cal Welling was fishing for pinks and hoping to catch a few early silvers when he ran into this beautiful king. Although the king season generally wraps up around mid-July, a few “feeders” are generally found throughout the year. It was a toss up as to what he enjoyed more — reeling in the 27-pounder or showing it off back at the dock!

Carter Thomas, age 8, got a chance to spend the afternoon with his grandpa, Kirk Thomas, manager of Silverking Lodge.  The two were targeting halibut but happened across this nice rock fish.  Something on Carter’s face says he’s not quite ready for school to start again!

We always like to see a few coho showing up on the inside waters during the month of August — in most cases it means we’ll have strong runs during our peak month of September.  Janet & Jim Long of Boise, Idaho took advantage of their family reunion trip to Ketchikan to find a few fish, including a few coho!  They think they’ll taste pretty good on their barbecue back in Boise and we agree!
