Silverking Lodge dock worker Jed Fackrell took to heart the adage, “All work and no play makes Jed a dull boy.” Not wanting to waste a perfectly good fishing opportunity (even during work!), Jed hung a hook off the Silverking dock, occasionally checking it from time to time. He managed to hook and play this 40+ pounder – surely while on his break! Halibut often migrate into shallower waters around public docks to feed on fish carcasses and scraps thrown over during fish processing.

All Work And No Play…
August 20th, 2010Great Find Late In The Season!
August 20th, 2010Cal Welling was fishing for pinks and hoping to catch a few early silvers when he ran into this beautiful king. Although the king season generally wraps up around mid-July, a few “feeders” are generally found throughout the year. It was a toss up as to what he enjoyed more — reeling in the 27-pounder or showing it off back at the dock!
Future Staff!
August 8th, 2010Fantastic Job!
July 26th, 2010We just got back from our fishing trip to Ketchikan. We are looking forward to coming again with a larger group. This time we’d all like to stay with you. We were so impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the professional way everything was handled with our 600lbs of salmon!
Can’t say enough about Janae, The Smokers and everyone else on the dock whom I didn’t get their names. They all took time to take many pictures of us, hang our catch for more pictures and weigh it all for us- all with a smile and a laugh!
We’re all looking forward to our next trip. Please keep me posted as far as specials go also any Derby info.
Thanks again for a wonderful experience!

Afternoon Fishing For Halibut
July 20th, 2010Don and Dawna Williams, from Rock Springs, Wyoming spent the afternoon targeting halibut near Silverking Lodge. They were successful in finding some fish in the 15-25 lb range. Since Don & Dawna were fishing from their self-guided skiff, they were able to retain two halibut per person. Not bad for an afternoon on the ocean!

Hot Morning Bite!

Chris Poynter took advantage of some great weather and a hot morning bite. Along with his daughter, Miranda, and son, Richard, the three were able to net these 10 coho and still make it back for breakfast!

Kings Still Hanging Around Into July
July 10th, 2010Self-guided fishing guests at Clover Pass Resort and Silverking Lodge have been enjoying some king salmon fishing, despite the peak of the run generally coming in mid-June. This year’s king run was about average and appeared to be tapering off before guests started finding some nice fish again late this week. In addition to the kings, the pinks have arrived, giving anglers lots of action on their rods during a day’s outing. Summer-run coho are also around, making it anyone’s guess as to what is on the other end of the line.

Fish & Fawns
July 10th, 2010Every year resident deer show up around the lodge with spring fawns in tow. This year, 3 does have newborns, two of the does with sets of twins. The deer are a treat for Silverking Lodge guests, who make sure and scrounge a melon rind or apple core for the deer as they wander through the property.

Nice King Finds Its Way Back To Silverking!
July 7th, 2010

Andrew, Aaron (holding fish), Preston, and Wendy Lewis
Former Silverking Lodge manager, Aaron Lewis, visited Silverking last week for a family reunion. Over 40 members of the Lewis family joined Aaron, spending the week catching fish and catching up. With a little bit of Southeast Alaska fishing experience under his belt, Aaron became one of the group’s “go-to” guys for members of the party that were experiencing their first Alaska fishing trip.
Aaron obviously knew what he was doing, as his family, including sons Andrew and Preston and wife Wendy, hooked into this beautiful king at Camano Point the first night of their trip. The fish weighed in at 39.7 lbs and was the perfect way to start off a week of fishing!
